Player of the year : Miguel Comminges
Roger Bunce Chairman of the STFC Supporters Club has this season been tracing a number of former players to invite them back to the Club for a ‘Legends Reunions’. Tracing the players is part of an ongoing project to display a permanent record, autographs and photos of previous players in the Winners lounge and corridors at the County Ground bringing back a sense of the history of the club to newer fans and renew many memories, for “older” supporters.
The first of these is on Saturday next v Boston when players from the late 50’s early 60’s including members of Towns first ever promotion team have been invited to attend the game against Boston.
It is planned to bring those attending into the winners lounge before Saturdays game to give fans there all chance to say “hello” and also hopefully introduce every one pitch side for fans who are not able to get into winners.
Unfortunately, other commitments will prevent some from attending this weekend, but we hope to see them later in the season.
Here are the players and their pen pictures:
Terry Wollen
A local player joined the club in 1960 having played for Swindon Schools, a stylish full back who made his debut at right back when just 17, the same age as his full back partner John Trollope. Unfortunately a bad leg injury finished his career and he retired in 1964 having made 96 appearances.
Dennis Brown
Dennis netted 45 goals in 106 appearances after joining the Town from Chelsea in 1964. Scored a Hat trick in a 3 – 0 away win at Orient, and then went one better in a 4 – 1 win at Bournemouth.
Arguably played his best ever game for the Town in that epic 3 – 3 draw at West Ham against the famous trio of World cup winners. Later played for Northampton and Aldershot scoring a further 66 goals. Dennis has worked as a rep since finishing football.
Peter Chamberlain
Made 82 appearances between 1957 and 1962 scoring 7 goals, now 70 Peter still lives in Swindon and was involved in a painting and decorating business with former team mate Arnold Darcy. Another who went on to play for Aldershot. Unfortunately unable to make today
Arnold Darcy
The senior member here today at 73, Arnold was a flying winger in days scoring 33 goals in 238 appearances. Arnold now lives near Abingdon.
Keith East
Signed from Portsmouth in 1964 and scored 28 goals in 50matches including 9 in two weeks, four v Merthyr Tydfil in the cup followed by five the following week in a league match v Mansfield both at the County Ground.
Keith scored over 50 more goals in his career with various clubs before moving to South Africa where he played in the same team as former Town defender Owen Dawson.
Now living in Surrey Keith has just retired from the motor industry where he worked for Volkswagon.
Ernie Hunt
A local player born in Swindon Ernie made 237 appearances for Swindon scoring 88 goals, Ernie then graced the top grounds in the country playing for Wolves, Everton and Coventry in his career.
His jobs since leaving football would fill this page, but he is sure to be the life and soul of any party this afternoon.
David Layne
‘Bronco’ as he was known after the cowboy character of that era, scored an amazing 35 goals in just 46 games went onto to score another 100 goals for Bradford City and Sheffield Wednesday.
Has been the licensee of the Crown Inn Meadowhall Sheffield for a number of years.
Keith Morgan.
Keith is a one club man, making over 360 league and cup appearances netting nine times A former club captain, Keith still lives locally and works as a builder and decorator. Keith performed consistently, throughout his whole career.
Don Rogers.
Possibly the most exciting player to ever wear as Town shirt, he scored over 170 goals for the Town in almost 500 appearances. Still lives in the Town where he was a Sports Shop and is a regular visitor to the County Ground.
Don does a lot of work to help school boy football, but other commitments prevent a return today although we hope to see him on the field again later in the season.
Mike Turner.
Mike was the goalkeeper in Towns first ever promotion season and made a total of 81 appearances between 1961 & 1964, before signing for Torquay. Mike now lives in Dorset where he worked for Plesseys for over 20 years until he retired.
Bobby Woodruff
A stylish wing half along with Keith Morgan they both could use the long throw to good effect. Between 1958 & 1964 made 205 appearaces for Swindon netting 20 times before transferring to Wolves and later playing for Palace, Cardiff & Newport County.
Bobby was later to become the Reserve and Youth Team coach at Cardiff. He has also been a Sports Company Representative and Social worker and still lives in Cardiff.
John Trollope
A Swindon legend. In the changing days of football I am sure his 889 appearances for one club, will never be beaten. John also served the club as coach, youth manager, assistant manager and as first team manager between 1980 & 1996.
John has also worked for Bristol Rovers and as a Football League Youth development regional officer and is now the Assistant Academy manager at Wolves. His team are playing Liverpool today so he is unable to be with us this after noon.
Sam Burton.
Legendary goalkeeper who made 509 appearances between 1946 and 1961, Sam ran a transport Café in Lyneham before moving to Gwent where he still lives.
Soon Sam will celebrate his 80th birthday but he is unable to be here today as he has just left hospital, after a knee operation. We hope he will be at the County Ground when he has fully recovered.
Bill Atkins.
Bill scored 30goals in 79 appearances for the Town, and went on to score more than 150goals in his career. After finishing football he bought a bakers and confectioners, and has been there for 34 years.
He doesn’t finish at the bakers until 12.30 p.m. on Saturday’s and is unable to make it today.
Roger Bunce says “This is an ongoing project so watch out for more of the same as the season progresses. There will be many surprises in store”
